I recently decided to challenge myself and practice drawing more realistic things. This is a sketch I did of our dog Noodles with pencil and charcoal the other night.

I find the study of art to be a spiritual practice. Art invites us to see the world differently.

Over the last few years I have dedicated a lot of time to practicing/studying art - and I continue to be amazed by the changes in what my eyes see.

The experience reminds me of the concept of maya/illusion in yoga.… how we see what our belief systems train us to see instead of what is actually in front of us.

And when we meditate, we begin to see beyond these belief systems, begin to see that our belief systems are like an invisible pair of glasses through which we have been filtering the world.

Art is the same… it invites you to look more and more closely at objects, colors, shapes, light/shade… and you start to see a different world.

I never thought I’d be able to draw a sketch like this.

I couldn’t have done this two years ago.

It’s not perfect. I still have more to learn, but rather than feeling intimated by how much more I have to learn… I am excited to see how my art will continue to evolve.

I hope that those of you who have watched my art (and music) evolve in recent years are inspired to create.

I believe we are all artists, here to add beauty to the world.

And we are all constantly growing and evolving.

We can begin any journey or pursue any interest at any age.

Whatever your heart calls you to do, listen to it.

Take steps in that direction now.

You’ll be amazed by how much you are capable of, amazed by how much you will grow along the way.
